Sports Massage

Sports massage is for both athletes and non-athletes.  Entry level athletes, world-class professionals to weekend joggers can benefit from this massage. Sports massage serves athletes as a way to prevent and relieve injuries.

The massage session differs from person to person.  It depends on the person’s body and the activity they are engaging in.  The massage focuses on areas of the body that are overused and stressed from repetitive movements.  If you don’t play a sport, you can still benefit from a sports massage.  It can alleviate tight stiff pains one gets from sitting a desk all day too.

No matter what sport or activity you do, I’ll work with you through your sports massage to alleviate pain from your injuries and prevent new ones from occurring.

Benefits of Sports Massage

Sports massages provide a number of benefits, even if you’re not an athlete.

By focusing on these specific areas, sports massage therapy can prevent or relieve delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). According to the American College of Sports Medicine, DOMS typically begins to develop 12 to 24 hours after the exercise has been performed. DOMS may produce the greatest pain between 24 and 72 hours after the exercise has been performed. You can help prevent DOMS by encouraging blood and lymph flow throughout the body, halting muscle fatigue and removing unwanted byproducts (lactic acid) faster from the body.

Consider having a sports massage before, in between and after major events. Some of the immediate benefits include:

  • Enhance pre-event preparation
  • Reduce recovery time and fatigue
  • Promote flexibility and endurance
  • Prevent injuries
  • Prepare the body and mind for optimal performance

Preparing for a Sports Massage

If you have a sporting event coming up, such as a big game or a half marathon, then you should schedule an hour-long massage two to three days before the event. This will help you warm up your major muscles and improve tissue pliability. It’ll also help get you in a good state of mind for your event.

Post-event sessions should last for 90 to 120 minutes. These longer sessions will help your body recover faster, replenish nutrients and ease muscle spasms.

I always recommend coming to a massage hydrated and ready to talk about your body. The more I know what you need, the better I will be able to help you with your massage.
